We reconvene in silence and darkness for the Tenebrae service (tenebrae is Latin for “darkness”). The Passion according to John’s gospel is read in its entirety, and the worship space grows darker as candles, representing Jesus’ life, are gradually extinguished. The loud noise (strepitus) reminds us of the stone rolled in front of Jesus’ tomb and the earthquake as creation mourned Jesus’ death. Again, the service pauses in silence until we return on Saturday.
