“Maundy” comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning “commandment,” referring to Jesus’ commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This love is sharply contrasted to the betrayal which follows, acted out in the Stripping of the Altar, symbolic of Jesus’ abandonment by his disciples and his stripping by the Roman soldiers before his trial. The service pauses in silence until we return on Friday.
